The peninsula southeastern of Drepano is called “Nisi” (island). A lagoon which is formed in the North of the peninsula, serves today as a natural reserve for rare sea birds, plants and fish. On the highest point of the peninsula, ruins of towers and defense constructions dated back to the late Byzantine Period, are found.

During the second Venetian Period (1687-1715) the lagoon and the safe port were used for the needs of the fleet of General Morosini. Remains of the harbor can be seen along the northeastern coast of the peninsula, whereas in the East of the modern chapel of Haghios Spyridonas foundations of a semicircular arch of a bigger church (which dates back to the Middle Ages) can be seen.

The need for maintaining, furnishing, and mooring the great Venetian fleet (so called “Armata Morea“) by the beginning of the 18th century as well as the strategic position of the protected cove, which is very close to Nafplio, led to the construction of important infrastructure by the Venetians. In that period the small fortress on the entrance of the bay was constructed by powerful walls with cannon embrasures on the top and a large cistern next to the north wall.
